How the AK STAR reports it

AK STAR is Alaska’s state summative assessment, built around Alaska’s own mathematics standards rather than a national consortium framework. Its math blueprint is organized into grade-level content strands/instructional areas and an adaptive growth component aligned to MAP Growth instructional areas.

Blueprint & weighting

The blueprint gives target item counts and point ranges by grade and strand, rather than fixed percentage weights. Grades 3-5 and 6-9 each include summative item counts plus additional growth items; grade 9 has no summative Geometry strand, with Geometry reported only through growth items.

A shipping clerk weighed 1414 packages. The frequency table shows each weight and how many packages had that weight.
Weight (lb)Number of packages2372125172222\begin{array}{c|c} \text{Weight (lb)} & \text{Number of packages} \\ \hline 2 & 3 \\ 7 & 2 \\ 12 & 5 \\ 17 & 2 \\ 22 & 2 \end{array}

What is the median package weight?

There are 1414 weights. Listing every weight from least to greatest, the 77th and 88th values are both 1212, so the median is 1212 pounds.

Two fair coins are flipped. How many outcomes are in the sample space?

Each coin has 22 outcomes, so the sample space has 2×2=42 \times 2 = 4 outcomes: HH, HT, TH, TT.

A class answered the statistical question "How many pages did you read this week?" The answers were 12,15,15,18,20,1512, 15, 15, 18, 20, 15. How many students were interviewed?

Each answer in the list is one student. Count every value, including repeats: there are 66 answers, so 66 students were interviewed.

A student is writing questions about pets. Which of these is a statistical question?

A statistical question anticipates variability: many people or things can give different answers. "How many pets does each family on my street own?" asks about many families, so the numbers can differ. It is a statistical question.

Five test scores are 7070, 7878, 8484, 9090, and 9696. One score is removed from the data set, but which score was removed is not stated. How does this affect the mean?

The mean of the five given scores can be found, but removing a different score changes the mean in different ways. Without knowing which score was removed, the effect cannot be determined.

Seven test scores are 70,70\textsf{,} 75,75\textsf{,} 88,88\textsf{,} 85,85\textsf{,} 90,90\textsf{,} 65,65\textsf{,} and 87.87\textsf{.} What is the mean score?

Mean =70+75+88+85+90+65+877=5607=80= \dfrac{70 + 75 + 88 + 85 + 90 + 65 + 87}{7} = \dfrac{560}{7} = 80.

Find the range of 10, 3, 15, 6.

Range =maxmin=153=12= \max - \min = 15 - 3 = 12.

The distances, in miles, run on seven days are 14,14\textsf{,} 6,6\textsf{,} 20,20\textsf{,} 9,9\textsf{,} 11,11\textsf{,} 18,18\textsf{,} and 6.6\textsf{.} What is the median distance?

In order, the values are 6,6\textsf{,} 6,6\textsf{,} 9,9\textsf{,} 11,11\textsf{,} 14,14\textsf{,} 18,18\textsf{,} 20.20\textsf{.} The median is the middle value, 11.11\textsf{.}
