Statistics and Probability skills

  1. Develop understanding of statistical variability

  2. Summarize and describe distributions

  3. Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question

Standards basis

How the ISAT reports it

Idaho ISAT is a state assessment administered to grades 3–8 and 11 and reported against Idaho grade-level content standards rather than a separate national testing framework. The public ISAT page points to summative blueprints and math specifications, while the Idaho Content Standards page shows the math program is organized by grade-band/domain progressions aligned to Idaho standards.

Blueprint & weighting

The public Idaho ISAT page references summative blueprints and item specifications, but the accessible official page content did not expose a published domain-by-domain percentage blueprint for math.

Mia writes three survey questions:

• How many minutes do students in my class spend on homework?
• How many minutes did I spend on homework last night?
• How tall are the players on my team?

How many of the three are statistical questions?

A statistical question anticipates variability. Asking how many minutes students spend on homework, and how tall the players are, both ask about a group, so the answers can differ. Asking how many minutes I spent last night asks about one person on one night, so it has one answer. That makes 22 statistical questions.

A survey asked students how many siblings they have. The frequency table shows the responses.
Number of siblingsNumber of students0312243542\begin{array}{c|c} \text{Number of siblings} & \text{Number of students} \\ \hline 0 & 3 \\ 1 & 2 \\ 2 & 4 \\ 3 & 5 \\ 4 & 2 \end{array}

What is the mean number of siblings per student?

Multiply each sibling count by its frequency and add: (0×3)+(1×2)+(2×4)+(3×5)+(4×2)=33(0 \times 3) + (1 \times 2) + (2 \times 4) + (3 \times 5) + (4 \times 2) = 33. With 1616 students, the mean is 3316=2.0625\dfrac{33}{16} = 2.0625 siblings.

Five students answered the statistical question "How many hours did you sleep last night?" The answers were 9,4,11,6,29, 4, 11, 6, 2. What is the median number of hours?

The median describes the center: put the values in order and take the middle. In order: 2,4,6,9,112, 4, 6, 9, 11. The middle value is 66.

A biologist measures five plant heights, in inches: 5858, 6060, 6262, 6464, and 6666. The tallest plant, 6666 inches, is removed from the data set. How does this affect the mean?

The mean of the original five heights is 58+60+62+64+665=62\dfrac{58+60+62+64+66}{5}=62 inches. Because 66>6266>62, removing the largest value lowers the mean.

The distances, in miles, run on seven days are 6,6\textsf{,} 8,8\textsf{,} 12,12\textsf{,} 9,9\textsf{,} 14,14\textsf{,} 7,7\textsf{,} and 14.14\textsf{.} What is the mean distance?

Mean =6+8+12+9+14+7+147=707=10= \dfrac{6 + 8 + 12 + 9 + 14 + 7 + 14}{7} = \dfrac{70}{7} = 10.

Find the median of 3, 7, 9.

Order the data and take the middle value(s): median =7= 7.

Seven test scores are 90,90\textsf{,} 50,50\textsf{,} 80,80\textsf{,} 55,55\textsf{,} 72,72\textsf{,} 60,60\textsf{,} and 83.83\textsf{.} What is the median score?

In order, the values are 50,50\textsf{,} 55,55\textsf{,} 60,60\textsf{,} 72,72\textsf{,} 80,80\textsf{,} 83,83\textsf{,} 90.90\textsf{.} The median is the middle value, 72.72\textsf{.}

Jaden lists four questions:

• What is my dog's weight?
• How much do the dogs at the animal shelter weigh?
• How old is my teacher?
• How tall is my desk?

How many of the four are statistical questions?

A statistical question anticipates variability. Asking how much the dogs at the animal shelter weigh asks about a group, so the weights can differ. Asking about one dog, one teacher, or one desk has a single answer. That makes 11 statistical question.
